Friends and family can keep raving about their e-readers, I still read books the old-fashioned way — and then some: I read hard copies with pen in hand, marking up the margins and creating my own little summary on the blank pages in the back. Recently, my bestie convinced me to start using an online note-taking software which has taken my nerdiness to new heights. Now I can write my summary and favorite passages in a personal node-based system to find for later reference. #DailyWin!

As I entered notes from a recent read, I realized I shouldn’t keep these words to myself. If the first 38 days of 2024 have left you even just slightly frustrated with politics, please read the entirety of Marie Yovanovitch’s Lessons from the Edge to remember the United States has dedicated public servants who take seriously their job to truly serve the public. Here is a passage from the Epilogue for a sense of what I mean (emphasis mine):

We also need to understand that supporting the aspirations of people who want a representative government is not the same as nation-building. Our policies don’t have to be all or nothing. We need to understand countries on their own terms and meet people where they are — and where they want to
